Frank Costantino
Watercolor Seminar

Boston Society of Architects
September 11th, 12th and 13th, 2009

Advanced Workshop
Course Description

Mr. Costantino is offering a rare opportunity for the qualified professional or experienced watercolorist to explore alternate methods for solving the many visual problems entailed in producing architectural watercolor illustrations.  A working knowledge of pigments, papers, brushes, and wash methods is a necessary prerequisite to apply the advanced techniques of the course.
In a collaborative group of skilled participants, the instructor will offer detailed analyses of palette selection, composition, shade and shadow projection, figure placement and rendition, tree forms and color, figure/ground relationships, sky patterns and coloration, among a number of key topics integral to the decision-making process.  A thorough review of color theory, complimentary, analogous, triadic, and split-complimentary concepts will be integrated with productive exercises, and with references to master artists’ and illustrators’ color palettes.
Multiple same-subject studies will comprise another aspect of the agenda, which will be an enormously effective means for expanding an approach and finding solutions, while providing insight to the powerful visual impact of color.  To sustain a high level of interest and a keen edge for improvement, participants will be expected to bring prepared drawings of their own work on previously completed projects, from which to generate studies, revisions or new images.
Insightful tips and demonstrations on the sensitive, yet critical aspects of value relationships, glazing, wet-on-wet and other wash methods, breaking painting blocks, applying finishing touches and investigating ways to objectively assess work will be a constant focus of attention.  Detailed critiques of each student’s study and/or finished drawings will enable everyone’s progress and refinement in their work.  AIA learning credits will accrue from this seminar.
Hundreds of satisfied professionals - from apprentice designers, to career architects, to MFA artists, to accomplished career illustrators - have benefited from Mr. Costantino’s seminars. Participants have come from Alaska, California, Canada, Florida, Illinois, New York, Oregon, Texas, Puerto Rico, all the New England states, and many other areas of North America.
For the practicing illustrator seeking fresh methods or loosening of constraints, attending this ambitious seminar will afford a streamlined vehicle for marked, rapid improvement in the non-competitive company of one’s peers.

“It was a “breakthrough” seminar for me regarding luminosity. I am leaving with a clear sense of how to make my paintings more rich and luminous.”
