About Fine Artwork

FRANK M. COSTANTINO W a t e r c o l o r i s t
A multiple award-winning architectural illustrator for over five
decades of collaborating with renowned national architects to produce
striking illustrations of projects around the world, Frank is also an
accomplished watercolor painter of urban scenes, landscapes, homes,
portraits and still life in a plein air, or a direct alla prima colorist style.
He is continually inspired by the effortless, masterful works of
watercolorists from many eras and cultures; particularly Sargent,
Homer, Turner, Wyeth, Zorn, Reid, Prendergast, Hiroshi and fellow
Winthrop native, John Whorf. Frank enjoys the fluid challenge and
unexpected possibilities of watercolor. Given the inherent transparency of his preferred medium and
infinite range of possible values and colors, he strives to express watercolor’s rich, luminous qualities
in his pieces. He also enjoys working on figurative sketches in pencil, pen & ink, and other mediums.
Over the years, he has painted series of plein air watercolors of Boston, Nantucket, and Monhegan
Islands, Catalina, Carmel & Monterey CA, Easton MD, Bennington, VT, St. Simon’s Island GA, Key West
& Miami FL, Castine ME, Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne, AUS, Tokyo & Kyoto JP; and in his hometown
of Winthrop MA, and other national and international locations; painting a variety of live, landscape
and studio subjects.
Frank is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society (N.E.W.S.) Boston, and elected
member of the Salmagundi Club of New York. He is also long-standing member and supporter of the
Marblehead, North River (Marshfield), Plymouth and Winthrop Art Associations, exhibiting annually.
He had also been a member of the Northeast Watercolor Society and Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters.
Frank is represented in select galleries. Collectors around the country have acquired his distinctive
watercolor originals or limited edition prints.
Frank helped found and participated in the Plein Air Vermont (PAVT) competition. He has been
selected and won awards in Plein Air Easton in MD, the Cranford NJ Plein Air Festival, the Castine Plein
Air Festival, ME, Glynn Arts Association Plein Air Affair, GA, Art Association of Nantucket Plein Air
Festival, and the Arnould Gallery Plein Air Painters Show in Marblehead, MA. Invited by Plein Air
magazine, Frank was twice a demo artist and field instructor for the Plein Air Conference & Expo in
Monterey, CA. He was also Juror of Selection for the Ocean Park Plein Air Event in Maine, and Juror for
the Nantucket Plein Air Festival, as well as judging many local art societies and associations. He has
served as region-wide Coordinator of the N.E.W.S. plein air program, Brushes With Nature, that
introduces members and visiting artists to the plein air experience. Frank is highly sought after by
many art groups for his lively, informative demos. For over 35 years, he has conducted intensive
watercolor workshops at all levels of skill.
Invited by Boston’s National Park Service, Frank helped celebrate the NPS’ 100th Anniversary by
painting Boston Light, which historic monument also celebrated its own 300th Anniversary. He is an
invited demo artist at the Mayor’s Kelleher Rose Garden annual fundraiser for the City of Boston. He
has received commissions from The Esplanade Association depicting Boston’s scenic parklands, the
Bostonian Society for its historic Old State House, Boston University, and the Charles River
Conservancy, painting river scenes to help promote their conservation programs. He has also been
commissioned for portraits, homes, weddings, and other special projects for his expanding clientele.
Articles on his work have been published in Fine Art Connoisseur, Plein Air, American Art Collector,
Artists Magazine, Art New England, Cape Cod Life, Boston, and Points East magazines, among other
publications. A number of his extensively-viewed demo videos can be found on YouTube; and his
plein-air suggestions are included in Plein Air magazine’s excellent online sourcebook, 240 Painting
Tips from Plein Air Convention Faculty.
