Piered Tender

Winthrop, MA

Observing the numerous levels of contrasts and dynamics from a higher deck, this simple tender’s vibrant turquoise innards seemed brighter, being offset by the tomato-red carpet runner and the muted green water. The dark shadows created vertical and angular counterpoints to the diagonal line of the carpet field and the skewed, off-centered angle of the tender – the impact coming from the intersection of tender, pier, deck edge, shadow, random rope line and the ocean’s neutral field, as well as the brilliant intensity of the primary colors. The subject theme of boats and water is one of an ongoing series of watercolors painted at the Cottage Park Yacht Club and other boating sites around Winthrop.
