Sail Colors Amidst the Blue
Nantucket’s Rainbow Fleet parade of sail is held every early August along the approach to this Island’s busy Harbor. Viewed from the sandy beachhead at Brant Point Light, the small boats are dwarfed in scale by the auto ferry gliding by, with its departing visitors waving to the boats. The colors of the distinctive sails are accentuated by the back-lit shaded hull of the ferry, providing an intensity and sparkle to the watercolor. The triangular shapes of the brightly colored sails are contrasted and balanced by the muted horizontal form of the ferry filling the background, and the boats’ hulls staggered across the composition.
